Economy and culture

The economy

The village is an ancient form of human settlement with deep roots in the past, playing since old times an important role in our country’s economic life, as an agricultural production center. It evolved with the passing of time under the influence of economic laws that were characteristic for different social orders.

In the commune of Ileanda, most villages have prevalent agricultural functions. Due to the climate and relief conditions, the priority sectors are the fruit and livestock growing. The fruit growing developed much due to the extension of the large agriculture areas in the region of sunny slope hills, especially in Sasa, Luminis, Dolheni and Dabaceni. The top position is held by the plum tree, follwed by the apple tree, nut tree and less the cherry tree.

In the meadow, terrace and low hill areas with temperate climate, sufficient rainfall, the grains (wheat, maize), industrial plants ant other food plants cultivation is predominant.

Among the textile plants, the hemp was the main raw material for making shirts and towels and was cultivated on vast lands. It was followed by the flax. Today, these cultures are lost.

As for the animal growing, the sheep have priority because of the vast grass and hayfields. The cattle and swine come next. In this field, high quantities of milk, meat and wool are obtained.

There is another kind of settlements with mixed economic profile, where the agricultural-related activities join the different other occupations of the inhabitants. For instance, in Ileanda there work two bakeries, a mill and an oil press. Within the forest-ward there is a wattle basket and joinery workshop. Other facilities are a modern gasoline station, a ballast pit, a TV & home appliances repair shop, two vulcanization shops, a car repair shop, a shoemaker, a tractor park, etc. In Perii Vadului, there is a wire knitting shop, a stone quarry in Rastoci, tzuica distilleries in Ileanda, Perii Vadului, Sasa and watering and bathing facilities in Bizusa.

During the week, the population is provided with that necessary by 9 private groceries, 2 hardware shops, 2 confectionery, a restaurant and a pub, all located in Ileanda. In every village there are stores and in Bizusa there is a non-stop restaurant. However, Ileanda is an important transportation center and has a richer trade than other communes.

The education facility network

The cultural activity, seen as a part of everyone’s public life, has played a special role in the maintenance of the Romanian folk on this land.

The customs conserved from the ancestors were the most precious and the only culture elements that penetrated the Romanian peasantry in its difficult times.

The establishing of first confessional schools between 1860-1862, later the estate school in 1881 and kindergartens replace the old priest or psalm reader and the religious study books with specially prepared teachers who have the mission to educate the young generations. Their number was small and two or more villages remunerated a teacher.

In our century, the situation has been regulated. First, the compulsory education was 4 years, then 7, 10 and today nine years. An always-increasing number of children attend the existing kindergartens and schools.

At the present, in Ileanda there is an agriculture school-group that is composed of primary, secondary and high school as well as a three-year professional school that qualifies pupils in different professions and also an evening high school.

Primary schools can be also found in Rastoci, Perii Vadului, Luminis, Dolheni, Dabaceni, Podis and Negreni. Kindergartens are in Ileanda, Rastoci, Perii Vadului, Dolheni, Dabaceni and Podis.

Beside the school, the Culture House was a focus for the masses but unfortunately the cultural activity decreased the last years. There are no more conferences, theater plays, folk dances, folklore assemblies, folk and pop music bands, vocalists and players, exihibitions, etc. Despite this, on Ileanda’s Culture House’s stage many of the disappeared habits have resurrected.

In Bizusa, every June, people use to organize a field party where different music bands take part. They are followed by parties in the open.

The only things that today are still working are the communal library within the Culture house and the high school’s library, provided a large number of publications from all fields. But also at the Culture House are present a pool table and two ping-pong tables where the youth are gathering for relaxation.

Beside the newspapers and magazines read at the library, people can subscribe via the post office and receive the press home.
